Family Green PLACE Nature and Photography Hikes

Youth, families, and others explore an Orange County Green PLACE property and receive tips on nature photography.

  • Co-leaders: Rachel Martella and Jake Lyons, Environmental Specialists with Orange County and Alex DeBear and Lee Ann Posovad (tentative), wildlife photographers

  • Location 2: Sun., Mar. 29, 2026, Lake Lucie Preserve, 43 Rainey Road, Sorrento, FL 32776

Beginners Bird Identification

This class will give you the skills and basic information to make you a successful birder and appreciate and enjoy our feathered friends more. Classes will take place in three different types of habitat.

  • Instructors: Kathy Rigling and Susan Thome-Barrett
  • Locations: Orlando Wetlands Park (initial meeting for both classes), Mead Botanical Garden, Oakland Nature Preserve and Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive (locations vary depending on season)
  • Dates/Times:
    • Winter 2026: Sun. Feb 8, Sat. Feb 14 and Sat. Feb 21, 2026 – 8:00 AM–11:30 AM
    • Fall 2026: Held in October, dates TBA
  • Class Limit: 12 participants per 3-part class
  • Cost per 3-part class: $60 members; $75 nonmembers; $10 youth (12 & under) with registered adult

Birds of Prey Identification

Focuses on the details and nuances of raptor identification.

Invasive Plant Identification Workshop

Can you identify Praxelis, Sida, Primrose Willow, Asparagus Fern, Syngonium, Balsam Apple, Lantan, Hairy Indigo, Chinaberry, Paper Mulberry, Cogon ad Natal Grasses?

  • Instructors: Dana Sussman, Florida Forest Service and Ron Chicone, Natural Resources Coordinator/Seminole County; both members of Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area
  • Location: Meet at 9am for classwork at UF Mid-Florida Research and Education Center, 2725 S. Binion Rd, Apopka, FL 32703 then we’ll go to the Apopka Birding Park, just to the right of the entrance to the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive.

Youth Photo Workshop

Join award winning photographers and Co-leaders: Wei-Shen Chin, Lauren Chin and Matthew Chin on a field trip/workshop designed to help bring youth photo skills to a higher level. Members of the Chin family have been winning awards in the Chertok Photography Contest for years and have agreed to lead this special first-of-its-kind Workshop.

Intermediate Bird Identification

Build on skills learned in the Beginners Bird Identification class and learn new identification tips in this 2-part (2-day) class.
