7:30 am: Beginner's Bird Watching - Class 3 of 3, Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive

Part 3 of 3. Our final BBWC takes us the Central Florida's Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive (LAWD), 11 miles of wetlands and a few surprise wooded areas. We'll meet at the Bike Parking Area to the immediate right of the entrance. LAWD has the highest bird counts on eBird in the Central Florida area. We'll fine those bird-watching techniques as we search for wetlands and shorebirds, raptors, and other birds drawn to the woods and brush in this area. 7:30 am: Limited Edition Field Trip, Bird & Bike, Green Mountain, Clermont

Join Alan Shapiro on a Bike & Trip will start at Green Mountain and ride to the Lake Apopka Loop Trail. Biking is a great way to explore the North Shore. We'll look for migrant warblers, waterbirds, raptors and other wildlife residents of the North Shore. For details contact Alan at alangrandiflora@gmail.com. Monthly Bird Survey at Wekiwa Springs Park. We will split into 2 groups led by Park Naturalist Paul Lammardo and OAS's Kathy Rigling. We will survey two areas of the park counting all birds we see and hear. We will travel through the sandhill and scrub, near small lakes and other transitional areas. Possible birds: Red-headed Woodpeckers, Bachman's Sparrow, Wild Turkeys, Northern Bobwhite, the occasional Short-tailed Hawk. Registration is required with entry directions provided upon registration. Note: survey begins before park opens so DO NOT enter through main entrance. For registration & to check for any date changes contact Kathy at riglingkathy@gmail.com.

7:00 pm: BIRD CHAT - Being a Seabird Observer on a Research Vessel with Allison Black

Allison Black spends weeks at a time each year at sea searching for marine life as a contracted Seabird/Marine Mammal Observer for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). During her presentation she’ll talk about life aboard a research vessel, the research she contributes to, and what we can learn from studying seabirds. She'll also share some of her most unique sightings at sea, and cover tips and tricks for seawatching from a boat. Enjoy a plethora of photos, and an insider's look at what wildlife our oceans hold. Florida Young Birders Field Trip to Merritt Island

OAS Young Birders Club will visit hotspots in Merritt Island led by locals Ethan and Brennan Landreville, along with top-birders Lorri Lilja and Kathy Rigling. We'll look for shorebirds, migrant warblers, raptors and possibly a quick sweep for pelagic birding. Hotspots will be dependent on whatever is currently active at the time of the trip. 8:00 am: Monthly Field Trip to Wekiwa Springs with Florida Native Plant Society

We'll join the Florida Native Plant Society on our Free monthly field trip to beautiful Wekiwa State Park in Apopka. We'll look for the park's iconic Red-headed Woodpeckers, Bachman's Sparrows, Summer Tanagers and Brown-headed Nuthatches along with the native flora in the park. We will meet at the Sand Lake Parking lot at 8am. Limited to 15 participants. Leader: Alan Shapiro, Kathy Rigling, Jennifer B and Pete Dunkleberg (NPS) Reservation required.

Monthly surveys will be held on the property of OAS' new Apopka Birding Park located just north of the entrance to the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. These surveys will help us monitor the birdlife as we begin restoration of this 67 acre property. We'll meet in the bike parking lot located on the right just before the gates to the Drive.
